Helicus presents BVLOS cross-border Belgium-Dutch flights, integrating with designated U-space airspace at the European BURDI closure conference. Brussels October 2025, EUROCONTROL hosts the final workshop of the SESAR Joint Undertaking Digital Sky Demonstrators (DSD) programme. Leading aviation technical experts from across Europe exchanged experience and showcased real-world progress. Key notes were provided by executive director Andreas Boschen, European Parliament Jan-Christoph Oetjen and European Commission DG Move Christine Berg. All focus was to turn European skies into the most efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly airspace in the world. BURDI.eu is one of three key initiatives under the #SESAR #DSD programme, co-funded by CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, and technically managed by SESAR Joint Undertaking. Helicus was honoured to present its maritime use cases that take place at the Port of Antwerp. It showcased how travelling through various Airspaces is organised, according to EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency regulations and gathering experiences to provide practical feedback to the legislators and aviation authorities. Specifically, automated cross-border flights between Belgium and The Netherlands where documented, taking place Beyond Visual Lign Of Sight (BVLOS). Specific procedures were followed, with interfaced (API) U-space services were consumed from the USSP. It showcased its practical flight experience, contributing to fulfil #BURDI project objectives: flying in and out of designated U-space airspace, geozones and national borders. It followed automated procedures consuming U-space Services together with its partners skeyes, SkeyDrone, NSX - Normalized Systems, Unifly, Port of Antwerp-Bruges and SafeSky. Also SAFIR-Ready was invited to showcase the signature SAFIR integrated value chain, that its partners organize in an open modular way (in line with DORAI principles). Visitors had the opportunity to see a large 3m x 3m fixed-wing VTOL was showcased, flying Helicus colours. A large fully operational drone - right in front of the Europa roundtable hall - drew significant interest and enthusiasm. Mikael Shamim, CEO of Helicus, delivered an inspiring presentation at the plenary meeting in the beautiful Europa hall, showing how the BURDI Project is being implemented in real operations today. He highlighted concrete results from live missions and emphasized the importance of collaboration and participation in such initiatives to turn the U-space vision into reality — enabling safe, automated, and interoperable drone services that support healthcare, logistics, and other vital sectors. The U-ELCOME DSD Project, BURDI.eu, and EALU-AER have already transformed vision into concrete outcomes: ✅ Deployment of Europe’s first U-space airspaces ✅ Certification of the first CISP and USSP ✅ Demonstration of safe, efficient drone operations in diverse environments Helicus is proud to be an active contributor to this transformation — bridging innovation and implementation to help build a smart, safe, and connected European sky. The next phase of Europe’s drone integration will focus on expanding U-space deployment across more Member States, ensuring interoperability, and building trust among communities and authorities. Together, we’re proud to shape the future of aviation. A smarter, safer, and digitally connected sky for Europe is taking shape — and Helicus is proud to help lead the way. #Uspace #Drones #CEFTransport #Innovation #DigitalSky #AviationTransformation

Helicus Academy Alumni Event – 2025 edition. Antwerp 8 October 2025, Helicus Academy held its sixth annual Alumni Event. Over thirty participants gathering at our headquarters with its beautiful view over the river, harbor and city. What started years ago as a simple reunion has now grown into a tradition where former and current interns, professors, and Helicus colleagues come together to share experiences, ideas and inspiration. The atmosphere was warm and dynamic, with conversations ranging from past research projects and design memories to new ideas that can shape the future of unmanned systems, industrial logistics and healthcare. The diverse backgrounds of the participants – engineering, computer science, economics, law, architecture, product development and more – once again showed the true strength of interdisciplinary exchange. At the previous alumni event in 2024, Helicus had just unveiled the Drone Cargo Port (DCP), at DronePort, where several drone manufacturers tested with its automated payload ground handling. A year later, the first DCP was installed in an operational hospital and permissions have been granted to fly clinical medical cargo between Diksmuide and Yper, a 26 km landroute. This year’s Alumni Event was indeed a moment to celebrate important milestones. End of 2024 we were accredited as a drone airliner, with the famous EASA compliant LUC. This was granted to us by the Belgian Civil Aviation Authorities (BCAA), after many years of work on compliance and nine years of flying drones and building practical experience by our manned aviation pilots. In September 2025, Helicus, together with Intertek and ADPO Group Nv, successfully launched the first cross-river cargo drone route in the Port of Antwerp. This achievement, reducing transport times from nearly an hour by road to just minutes by drone, demonstrates how innovation can directly impact efficiency, sustainability and safety in one of Europe’s busiest logistics hubs. The 2025 Alumni Event reminded us once again that technology alone does not create progress. It is the people — students, researchers, professionals and our strong partnerships with major organisations — that bring energy, creativity and commitment to turn ideas into reality. We thank all participants for their enthusiasm and look forward to continuing this journey together. We already look forward to next year October !! #HelicusAlumni #DroneCargoPort #FutureOfLogistics SAFIR-Ready University of Antwerp, Ghent University, KU Leuven, Université libre de Bruxelles, Vrije Universiteit Brussel , UZA, UZ Leuven , UZ Brussel, UZ Gent, CHU de Liège, CHU Brugmann, Cliniques de l'Europe / Europa Ziekenhuizen, Royal Military Academy, Belgium, Antwerp Maritime Academy, VIVES University of Applied Sciences, FOD Mobiliteit en Vervoer / SPF Mobilité et Transports, FOD Volksgezondheid/SPF Santé Publique

Successful Medical Validation Flights: A Step Closer to Routine Drone-Based Sample Transport Helicus successfully completed a key milestone in the medical validation process for aerial transport of clinical samples on behalf of the Jan Yperman Ziekenhuis clinical laboratory in Ieper. As part of a regulated validation study, blood samples from 20 volunteering dialysis patients were divided into three matched sets: one transported via drone during a 15-minute autonomous flight, automatically delivered to the lab through the Drone Cargo Port (DCP) and the pneumatic tube system, one transported by car over a 30-minute road journey, and one retained at the lab as a reference control. All samples were analysed for quality and clinical integrity upon arrival. The initial results look promising with no significant differences identified between drone and taxi transportation. This study is not a proof of concept, but a required medical validation step in the operationalisation of routine drone logistics between the Jan Yperman Hospital in Ieper and its satellite location in Diksmuide. It builds on Helicus’ integrated multimodal transport architecture, which connects automated intra-building systems with autonomous air transport. We thank the teams at the clinical lab and the innovation department at Jan Yperman, the patient volunteers, and all contributors to this important validation phase. Their commitment brings us closer to a resilient, fast, and clinically safe logistics solution for healthcare. hashtag#MedicalValidation hashtag#HealthcareLogistics hashtag#DroneTransport hashtag#MedicalInnovation hashtag#Helicus hashtag#JanYpermanZiekenhuis hashtag#UAM hashtag#FutureOfCare hashtag#DronesInHealthcare
